Summer Activities for Kids in the NRV
School will soon be out and summer officially will be here. The best thing about NRV in the summer is that your kids (or grandkids) will never be bored. Check out this list of things to keep busy and make memories.
1. Enjoy Summer Camps. From running a food truck to learning art skills to building a fort to practicing their dance moves, the NRV summer camp scene has something for everyone. There are day camps and overnight camps in the list, so you cand find the perfect fit for your family. Check out this list for opportunities.
2. Spend the Day (or Night) at the Zoo. Mill Mountain Zoo is home to 74 species of mammals, birds and reptiles, including Snow Leopards, Red Pandas, Japanese Macaque, and Andean Condor. Ride the ZooChoo train, too! Check their Facebook page for nighttime events or their events page for regularly scheduled events like Breakfast at the Zoo.
3. Hit the Museums. We're home to two museums focusing on kid-friendly exhibits and experiences. In Blacksburg, hit the WonderUniverse. They will open Summer 2019 and include an area for Preschool ages, sensory rooms, and educational areas, like learning about the farm to table process. If you're ready to visit a museum before they're open, be sure to check out Roanoke's Kids Square Children's Museum. Part of the Center in the Square area, the museum features a sensory area, kids' camps, and more. If allergies or germs are a particular issues, you can visit their website to learn about their cleaning schedule and products.
4. Splash Around at the Frog Pond. When the temperatures go up, cool down at the local NRV pool. The Frog Pond is perfect for kids of all ages. They have a splash pad for little ones and zero depth entry into the main pool. There are 4 slides, a whale that spouts water, and bubblers to play in. The pool season starts Memorial day, so get your swimsuits ready. 5. Take in a Show. Roanoke Children's Theater has shows all summer, suitable for different ages. They also offer theater camp for your drama-minded tweens and teens. Look through the 2019-2020 season list and make a day of going to see one. It makes an unforgettable experience.
